Lots of my plants are being munched by slugs and snails. I’ve sprinkled metaldehyde slug bait around the plants. Can I continue to water the plants with the slug bait there? Will it wash away or wash into the plant?

Metaldehyde slug bait will kill about half of the garden vegetable plants, so put a ring around your plants, don’t put it directly on the plants leaves.

Yes, it must be replaced after each watering or rainfall. Some brands say the bait stays active after getting wet, but my experience is the slugs and snails prefer a fresh plant leaf to slug bait that has been wet.

If you have a Quart Spice bottle, such as Chili Powders or Gravy Mixes are sold in, with large holes in the lid, store your slug bait in it. It works like a giant salt shaker and you don’t spill or waste nearly as much as pouring straight from the box or bag.

I am a college student majoring in Environmental Studies, and I just recently started to become interested in small-scale food production. My university has an amazing community garden where I have a small plot. I’d love to find a good gardening blog that will help me along as I attempt to care for this super small but awesome garden. Do you guys have any favorites? (My zone is 8B, by the way.)

I’ve been growing food organically in the San Francisco bay area (zone 9b) for 26 years, and I’m putting everything I’ve learned about organic gardening into a web site, http://www.grow-it-organically.com

Organic gardening is about feeding the soil to feed the plants, and growing robust vegetables that can fight off pests and still produce high yields.

Pictures on the site are from my garden. Some pages you might find useful:

http://www.grow-it-organically.com/attracting-beneficial-insects.html
http://www.grow-it-organically.com/facts-about-soil.html
http://www.grow-it-organically.com/how-to-grow-vegetables.html

I hope this helps!

I’m moving in to a new place and I want to plant some flowers but I dont really have a green thumb so I was wondering what flowers grow best in washington state so that I wont have to give them any special treatment. So what type of flowers will grow best? And should I mix potting soil with the natural ground soil?

http://www.ehow.com/list_7305643_flowers-plant-washington-state.html
I live in Oregon Zone 6. Call your local garden center to find out what zone your in and visit your local garden center and they will answer which plants in their selection will be best for your area.
I have tulips, Trumpet vines all sorts of winter blooming plants such Daphne and bulbs. Lots of shrubs nd love mini maple tress there are many varieties. Evergreens and deciduous trees like Crabbe apple, plum. Ash and white Birch and many more. None require special treatment other than good soil drainage, and watering during dry periods. Rhododendrons and Azaleas are the most popular plan tin the Northwest. We are lucky to live in this are we can grow more plants than most other areas. Lavender and wisteria are super here. http://www.rhodyman.net/rarhodyho.html

I am going start off with gardening at my patio. I live in a apartment (first floor) & I have a small patio. I wanna grow flower plants like Gerber daisies or Mini roses. I live in Denver. Any suggestions where to get started with? Which pots are good for those plants? Ideas on where I can get them?

Home depot is an excellent source and you can pick the pots or shelf boxes according to your taste. I prefer heavy plastic to pottery for durability.

They say gardening is one of the most relaxing past times. Tho it’s a lot of work.
I learn to have patience most of all out of everything. waiting for the garden to be in bloom.

During the season it is one of my forms of meditation ~ It forces me to be fully present ~ you don’t want to be pulling weeds if you are thinking about anything else, you are assured to pull out good plants as well. There are so many metaphors for the self to be found in gardening, while weeding I’m reminded that I have to work at removing my own defects of charector so that the virtues of my personality can grow.

As far as patience – I learned it is not about the destination, but the process.
