I’m not planning on having the flowers actually sprout and bloom by then, but i was going to plan them in little pots for my mother. What types of flowers would be pretty and in season?
Annuals are great because they bloom almost all summer. If you want flowers for the sun begonias, zinnias, geraniums, grebera daisies, and lantana which is a nice vine like flower.
Impatients are great for shady spots. I would go to a nursery and see what you like. Tell the people what you are trying to do and what you like and they should help you create a great present for your mom.

cannas are great. need 70 at least and full sun. one it called tropicanna and the leaves are great so while you wait for blooms the will have large tropical leaves. they don no need amazingly large pots and will grow many pups or babies eventually giving a very full looking pot. grows 5 feet.
also nice flowers are bromilads. they require water and humidity. they can stay in small pots for a very long time, but wont bloom for a few years

for bloom throughout the summer you need to have annuals and any will do great. You have to choose them depending on whether they will be in sun or shade, how tall or sort you want them and of course what colours you want.
i would also find out whether they need any care to keep blooming. Some plants need the finished flowers to be cut off to continue to bloom nicely and fully eg cosmos and others just look after themselves and bloom away all summer long.
some will even last into fall and through frosty days eg snapdragons
another thing to consider if you are planting in pots is to have 2 forms of plants in the pots. one kind that grows up and the other that will trail over the egde and down ( either a little eg lobelia or a lot eg wave petunia
