What are some hardy plants that I can add to my 20 gallon tank?

I’ve had plants before but they turn yellow after a week so I removed them. My other 20 gallon tank has fake plastic plants. I am starting a new 20 gal tank. I want to fill it with plants before I add any fish. I know that I need to care for the plants as much as I would for the fish. So I want to know what kind of plants I should get for starters. What else do I need to know?

I know this is a commerical site, but it does give pix and facts about plants. I’ve always like Amazon sword plants and used those for angelfish spawning.

Without using carbon dioxide injection, you can plant anubias and cryptornes and they will thrive with low light and very little by way of fertilization. Amazon Swords require more light and will quickly yellow and wilt without fertilizers.

I would recommend you invest in a nice light for your tank. That way you can grow almost anything you would like (as long as it’s not too picky about substrate or water conditions). 3-4 watts per gallon would be perfect, so you need a 60-80 watt light. The best kind are compact florescent. If you get a nice light it will be great for the plants and the fish will also look amazing!
