i have an enclosed space down the side of my house where i have hung a hammock, now i just need to make the space feel like a rainforest retreat. i would like to plant plants that will give the rainforest feel that wont grow too high and that are cat friendly (non toxic to cats and no sharp bits). can any1 recommend plants i could use?
Well i live in Australia, Southern Queensland. does that help?

Ferns don’t grow too high and you find them in the forest. You should also add a misting system above your hammock if you want a rain forest atmosphere. If you have stepping stones plant moss between them. Whats his face on Gardening by the Yard suggested this fern as it doesn’t spread all over the place. Dryopteris erythrosora ‘Brilliance’ . I got mine from gardencrossings.com. Also, look into elephant ear plant. It gets huge leaves that would close the area in and look good with the ferns. have fun.

you really need to give a location or hardiness zone to get a good answer

Canna, windmill palm

Hostas are great and they come in different types/colors. Ferns, bleeding heart, columbine are good to.

All of the above look good… you could also use some variegated ivy plants to grow up the fence. They will bring a bit of year round colour and do well in shade.
